Happy New Year to everyone studying Japanese with Yuki-senseiās class!
I hope you had a warm and relaxing holiday season.
The New Year is a very important time in Japan. People reflect on the past year, make wishes for the future, and enjoy many traditional customs.
What Is the Japanese Zodiac?
In Japan, we use the Japanese zodiac (å¹²ęÆļ¼eto), which is based on a 12-year cycle of animals. Each year is connected to one animal, and people believe that each animal has its own personality and meaning.
This year is the Year of the Horse.
What Does the Year of the Horse Mean?
The Horse is often associated with:
Energy and speed
Independence
Taking action
New challenges and adventures
Many people believe the Year of the Horse is a good time to try something new, move forward with your goals, and not be afraid of change. Itās a year that encourages us to be brave and active.

A Small New Year Story: Japanese Lottery Culture
As a small side story, there is a very popular New Year tradition in Japan called the ā幓ę«ćøć£ć³ć : Nenmatsu Jumboā lottery. At the end of the year, many people buy lottery tickets and dream about winning a big prize. Even if they donāt win, itās something people enjoy talking about with family and friends.
Last year, I also joined this tradition. I bought lottery tickets worth 18,000 yen (about $ 120 ). I won 5,000 yen, so in the end, I lost money haha. But checking the results was exciting, and I had fun. For many people in Japan, the experience itself is part of the enjoyment.
Letās Challenge Ourselves Together This Year!
I hope the Year of the Horse brings you new challenges, confidence, and positive energy. Learning a language is also a kind of challenge and every small step matters.
In Yuki-senseiās class, Iād love to hear from you.
